Break Through The Tradition

Working is the most common and long accustomed way of generating wealth.

An unemployed one is always associated with premature, instability and unreliability.

Tradition is always hard to break. What's more, it is such a long held tradition.

History shows, transformation requires innovation and a strong sense of courage and vision.

There are simply many ways out. Employment should be the last resort, not the priority.

Now, I need the courage and vision to break through the tradition.

Stereotype

Does it hold some truth to say the following?

1) Chinese are generally selfish and greedy;

2) Malay are generally lazy and weak on Math; and

3) Indian are generally violent.

The first and "reasonable" explanation comes to most people's mind is the idea of stereotype.

Why? Perhaps, it is because stereotype offers a reasonable and convenient explanation to the mystery.

"Stereotype is a bad thing"

"To say so is simply wrong because there are Chinese who are very altruistic, there are Malay who are very hard-working and good on Math and there are also Indian who are extremely soft, polite and kind..."

"We should not stereotype!"

How do people react when someone is claiming that French are generally more romantic and Japanese are generally more polite?

It sounds OK to most people and I do not think that people would actually stand up and bang on the table claiming that it is wrong to say so because it is a stereotype.

I do hope to meet someone who can actually offer me a more surprising and comprehensive analysis of the community in the following way:

Chinese are generally so and so BECAUSE they are.....they have been taught.... their education...background...bla bla bla...........

Malay are generally so and so BECAUSE they are........

Indian are generally so and so BECAUSE they are.......

(Explanations which are truly logical, reasonable, statistical and scientific)

Though I am fully aware that the statement is not the whole truth. =)

A New Resolution

3 years have passed and I've finally stepped into the final phrase.

There are, after all, great memories.

Lots of friends and knowledge have been gained, though lots of time have been wasted too, like many others.

If I were to decide once again, I would definitely make the same decision again to come here.

It's simply wonderful to be here with everyone and everything.

Yet, time is going against me with an ever stronger force. It's cruel but I've decided:

To get the best out of the best!

Why hate BERSIH?

Believe what your eyes have been observing and what your ears have been listening to.

There are people out there thrashing and cursing BERSIH organizers and BERSIH rally (for those who are clueless as to what ‘BERSIH’ is all about, please feel free to check it out on http://bersih.org/?page_id=4109).

Oppositions to BERSIH had wanted its rally to be called off almost instantly even if by force. As much as one could view a lack of ‘sportsmanship’ in their behavior, we as comparatively similar observers and romantic patriots of Malaysia cannot simply ignore their voices and reasons or we might just end up similarly criticizing them abusively. Then we would not be any different from them, would we (just food for thought)? Rather, let us analyze the reasons behind the opposing views before we can fully appreciate the beauty behind a broken mirror and eventually head towards building a truly united nation emphasized on mature and civilized freedom of speech.

I have been making several personal observations for the past weeks which have permitted me to identify few possible reasons for the objections and criticisms against BERSIH:

1. BERSIH is politically motivated.

2. Street rally is undemocratic, uncivilized and against Malaysian culture.

3. BERSIH is sending a wrong impression to the international community.

4. BERSIH is causing a lot of damage to the country.

5. BERSIH is not being held at the right place.

6. BERSIH is provocative and threatens the security of the country.

Do any of these allegations sound familiar to you? Surely they must have. These views and reasons have been widely disseminated not only by word-of-mouth, but they also have been deeply embedded into the mindsets of many Malaysians especially by Malaysia’s main stream media in the course of interviewing our respected Ministers or through television advertisements.

How true are these indictments as propounded by Ministers, the media or even by the people themselves? Let us explore these allegations together.

1) BERSIH is politically motivated.

BERSIH organizers say that BERSIH is in no way involved in politics. Do you believe it? Of course not (at least for those who are opposing the street rally)! So, why do they believe the BERSIH rally is politically motivated? There are two possible reasons. Firstly, most Opposition parties are supporting the street rally. Secondly, Malaysia’s General Election is just around the corner some three years after the 2008 political tsunami. It is only sensible to believe that the Opposition may be trying to exploit the event to their benefit, hence rendering the BERSIH demonstration a politically motivated move.

Let us deal with the first reason. BERSIH has, in fact, invited all political parties, including Barisan Nasional allies, to join its effort to peacefully but persuasively call for a clean election. Unfortunately, such a noble fight is seemingly entertained only by Opposition parties, and not by the country’s ruling power. One highly probable and logical reason for the ruling power’s refusal to join BERSIH’s call is that joining the BERSIH rally is tantamount to admitting that past elections have been unclean and the results have been tainted with. Opposition parties, with nothing to lose, join it with full force. Should the Oppositions keep away from every good cause simply to avoid the accusation of being a political influence? This view does not amuse me but is rather baffling.

Although it could be true that the Opposition is exploiting the street rally to gain back its momentum for the upcoming General Election, can this be a justifiable excuse to condemn the rally as being wholly politically motivated regardless of the organizers’ possibly noble objectives?

In a democracy, it is only fair and reasonable for any Opposition political parties to request for a clean, reliable and impartial voting system to enable all parties to have a fair fight in the every general election. There is nothing ‘dirty’ about having an Opposition calling for ‘CLEAN’ and ‘BERSIH’ elections. Politically, that’s a logical and beneficial move for any parties in the Opposition. However, that does not warrant one to claim that the BERSIH rally is indeed a political rally. Instead, it is a necessary move, by the RAKYAT and opposition parties, to fight for a clean and fair election.

The necessity of the rally could be justified by countless failure to have fruitful roundtable discussion (you need evidence for this, find some articles online and post the links here for reference). Hence, it is unjustifiable to claim that the Opposition parties are exploiting the rally, unless you are speaking from the government’s perspective, and not from an independent point of view.

As a Malaysian, I really hope that the country’s election(s) is fair and taintless from negative elements to truly reflect a democratic society whichever government may be elected.

It is not properly founded to simply accuse another person’s effort as politically motivated simply because of the participation of Opposition parties.

In short, this point is a baseless accusation.

2) Street rally is undemocratic, uncivilized and against Malaysian culture.

‘Democracy’ is a form of government in which all citizens have an equal say in the decision that affects their lives. Ideally, this includes equal and free participation in the proposal of ideals or suggestions, and their development through the constituted parliamentary process or governmental process into laws or policies respectfully. Democracy also encompasses social, economic and cultural conditions that enable the free and equal practice of political self-determination.

Thus, it is democratic to express one’s concerns, opinions and suggestions on any policies, legislations or matters affecting his or her life. As long as the means used are peaceful and not harmful to the public, it cannot possibly be wrong to say that there is nothing undemocratic to deliver certain messages on the street to the government. Instead, it would be rather undemocratic to prohibit citizens of a democratic country to assemble and voice out their concerns which apparently have not being adequately addressed by their elected representatives during Parliamentary sessions or on the streets of the political constituencies.

‘Civilization’ whereas refers to an outcome of strong culture and religion of a society, although the term itself is sometimes controversial as it is often used to refer to an international standard of conduct. Be it international or local, would it be proper to term a peaceful street rally as uncivilized or against Malaysian culture?

In Malaysia’s book of history, street rallies have indeed been used to express the people’s dissatisfaction as well as their aspirations. President of Malaysia’s Bar Council, Mr. Lim Chee Wee pointed out in a press conference (http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/print/malaysia/public-rallies-part-of-malaysian-history-says-bar-council/) that UMNO founder Datuk Onn Jaafar, the grandfather of Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, had led mass protests in a bid to protect Malay interests against British plans to form the Malayan Union in 1946.

“Subsequent UMNO leaders have also led street demonstrations, for example, to call for independence and those in support of the Palestinians,” said Lim at the press conference,”

“Those who say that street protests are not part of our culture are clearly ignorant of our nation’s rich history... the largest protest against the Malayan Union was not less than 15,000 (people),” he added.

An appreciation of our forefathers’ peaceful but forceful fight for national independence would allow us to reason that street rally is not very much against Malaysian culture or civilization. And we are not even talking about rallies or demonstrations in other republic or democratic countries which we earnestly look up to like in the U.S., or Australia or even our neighboring Thailand and the Philippines. To claim that street rally is uncivilized and against our culture would indeed be sort of ignorant of the significance and beauty of the freedom of assembly and freedom of speech and expression. Indirectly, would not such ignorant view denote that our country’s independence was obtained by undemocratic and uncivilized means?

3) BERSIH is sending a wrong impression to the international community.

BERSIH organizers have been adamant in their claims and determination to hold a peaceful street rally for the purposes of electoral reform, as opposed to a violent one. This stance could be interpreted as an act of democratization for a developing nation after having attained Independence for more than 50 years. Should the government permit such rallies for a good cause would not other developing nations see Malaysia as a role model in building a democratic government by its people, of its people and for its people? Would not Malaysia then be seen as matured, civilized, fair and transparent even in international dealings from the manner its government handles internal affairs? Instead it is rather controversial as to which party has been sending a wrong impression to the international community. The whole world can and would have witnessed for themselves which party is acting for peace and justice in light of the unprovoked attacks and force used against unarmed civilians during the recent 9th July street rally.

4) BERSIH is causing a lot of damage to the country.

Indeed, street rallies and demonstrations could bring along with them a lot of inconvenience to members of the public and loss of business or profits to certain groups of society especially when streets and cities are locked-down in a defense against apparently uncivilized peaceful rally. Could the material damage caused by one street rally be relatively more severe as compared to never-ending but rather increasing issues and realities of corruption and manipulated elections? In a way, BERSIH has actually successfully created a rather intense sense of awareness among our Rakyat about their country, elections, politics, and more importantly Malaysia’s future. Individuals who have only minded their own business since the last election now start to question, “when is the next election?” and taking heed of all kinds of political upheaval which would enable them to make the right decision for their own future, the future of their children and the direction of the country as a whole. So, does the BERSIH rally entirely bring detriment to the country is your view to take.

5) BERSIH is not being held in the right place.

The venue for the BERSIH rally is one of the most controversial issues. The rally, which was scheduled to be held on the streets of Kuala Lumpur was initially severely condemned with no room for compromises. However, after a much delayed audience with His Royal Highness, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak finally took the ruling government’s first step of compromise and made a ‘loud’ promise to allow the rally to be held in one of the stadiums with no conditions attached.

Regretfully, as much as the rally campaigners would have desired much to obey the counsel of His Royal Highness, the promise made by the ruling government ended up seemingly more like a ploy to delay the rally and make a fool out of their ‘nemesis’. Not only the application to use Stadium Merdeka was refused quite immediately after the Prime Minister’s statement was published nation-wide; the organizer was also ‘advised’ to apply for a stadium outside of Kuala Lumpur. Should not that ‘advice’ have been stated in the Prime Minister’s compromise? Based on these two facts, it is up to the general public to consider whether there has been a fair opportunity provided to the rally organizers to willingly accept the promise made to them?

There are primarily two correlated reasons claimed by the authorities for so rejecting BERSIH’s application to use Stadium Merdeka for the rally:

a) Stadium Merdeka is situated in the centre of KL city. To hold such an event there would cause massive traffic congestion; and

b) The traffic congestion would then cause ample inconvenience to the general public at large.

Well, it is true that the BERSIH organizers could have switched the venue to Shah Alam to avoid a direct confrontation with police forces. However, in my humble opinion, there are reasons behind the organizers’ decision to proceed with its initial plan:

Fact 1#

The BERSIH organizers were ‘advised’ by the government to apply for a permit to use the Shah Alam Stadium despite no guarantee from the Prime Minister himself and the police force that such application would be granted in the short period of time (so much for a compromise or a promise). Instead, the organizers would have to apply for the permit via ordinary procedures and hope for the ‘goodwill’ of their democratically-elected government to allow their application. Suddenly, the promise to allow for a stadium-held rally fades into redundancy.

Reason 1#:

Taking into consideration that the Prime Minister has reiterated that he would leave all these matters to the discretion of the police or relevant parties and also the organizers’ recent experience in the Stadium Merdeka’s application, would it be considered responsible and committed instead for an organizer of a well-publicized rally to simply take the risk of ending up with no determinate venue at the very last minute? What if the application to use the Shah Alam Stadium is also turned down just like the application to use Stadium Merdeka? The organizers have no time to waste just to reorganize the event, change the rally’s route, re-arrange all logistics and inform all parties of the changed venue. It would also cause great confusion to the participants, especially the ones who would travel from outside Kuala Lumpur. Without the authorities’ co-operation, certainly holding the rally in the Shah Alam Stadium or any other stadium for that matter is a rather hard mission to accomplish. In such context, it must be understood that for true democracy to take place ‘it takes two hands to clap’ (that is both the government and the people must earnestly co-operate and compromise).

Fact 2#

Few reasons could be cited to explain the organizers’ decision to hold the BERSIH rally at Stadium Merdeka which are the participants’ convenience and the significance of the venue. Kuala Lumpur is the meeting point of all States and reflective of the Federal rule. Stadium Merdeka also reflects the voice of the people who called for and witnessed Malaysia’s Independence 54 years ago. The Shah Alam Stadium whereas is less strategic and quite inconvenient considering that public transport to the Shah Alam Stadium is rather lacking. This venue would also lack the prominence which Stadium Merdeka has.

Reason 2#:

Take my case as an example. I am probably one of the many other Malaysians who have no idea how to take public transport to Shah Alam Stadium from my house in Kuchai Lama. Usually, it would take me about 10 minutes to drive over to Midvalley to catch a favorite movie. If I were to use public transport, it would have taken me at least 30 minutes to reach Midvalley taking into account minimal waiting time.

What if I were to take public transport to Shah Alam? Firstly, I personally have no idea how to do just that. Secondly, based on my friends’ experiences, I know that it could cost me at least about half an hour to an hour if not more just to reach Shah Alam Stadium minus all the waiting time. Given the current state of reliability of Malaysian public transport, the organizer would surely have been worried about the inconveniences caused to its participants, hence significantly reducing the number of supporters. Furthermore, if everyone else were to use their own vehicles much traffic congestion also would be caused along the highways and within the particularly affected Shah Alam area.

The government would undeniably have a legitimate concern to prevent and to control any possible disruption to the people’s daily life and traffic congestion in KL City thus its decision to request that the BERSIH rally be taken off the streets.

However, considering that the Organizers have compromised to hold the demonstration at Stadium Merdeka, would it still be appropriate for authorities to turn down their request at the very last minute and require the organizer to try another stadium? Just another point to ponder, would not and had not the decision to set up road blocks at major highway to check if you have yellow shirts a day before the rally and to close down ALL forms of public transport accessible to KL City on the rally day cause even greater inconvenience to the public at large?

I wonder whether the main concern is about road conditions.

6) BERSIH is provocative and threatens the security of the country.

The true objective of organizing the BERSIH rally must be carefully considered and understood before strongly accusing its organizers and the rally of such intimidating and criminal act. Does BERSIH truly intend to overthrow the government? Is BERSIH designed to instill hatred and disunity among loving, peaceful and knowledgeable Malaysians? Has BERSIH threatened those who chose not to support the street rally? Has BERSIH taken up arms during the rally?

The security of the country is undeniably one of the many considerations which Malaysia’s Home Minister and the PDRM (Royal Malaysian Police Force) should take into account when discharging their duties.

Nevertheless, although the BERSIH rally could be in the face of unpredictable but certainly unintended untoward incident, would it be tantamount to threatening the security of the country? What about the incidents when PERKASA president had publicly threatened the Christian community as well as publicly warned the Chinese community to stock up before the street rally?

Regretfully, the Internal Security Act and Emergency Ordinance do not seem to have been utilized for their due purposes when these legislations were most needed but are instead seen to have been manipulated for political reasons.

ALL WE WANT IS TRUE DEMOCRACY

Idealistically, a peaceful assembly is a right of anyone called a human being and could reasonably be allowed for noble objectives. However, realistically, a street rally could wreak havoc, or even worse result in injuries, death, or economic downturn. Thus, the potential damage is well-recognized, yet this consideration alone is insufficient to simply prohibit street rallies.

Take driving for an example. Driving can be a safe activity, yet it could cause injury or death if the driver drives recklessly. Does it then mean that driving should be prohibited for all men for whatever purpose? To prevent untoward accidents, Parliament has enacted relevant laws to punish those who irresponsibly abuse road-use. In addition, traffic police officers are duty-bound to maintain the safety of road users.

Therefore, street rallies would similarly involve certain potential damage, but the damage could be minimized with the co-operation of various parties. Police forces should be there maintaining the safety of the participants, not to attack them. Participants themselves should also be acting responsibly in order to ensure the safety of others and for more efficient achievement of a noble peace walk. Those who act irresponsibly or dangerously during the rally should indeed be arrested, but not every one of the peaceful demonstrators.

In my humble opinion, the people of this country would truly appreciate and respect the government even more if justifiable reasons could be given to refuse a peaceful rally or better still to allow for peaceful rallies to be held for good causes without unnecessary restrictions, or to deploy police forces to ensure the safety of rally participants and maintain traffic conditions.

If the government would do as such, it certainly would earn the present government the title, “Caring Government”- in its truest sense.

Do you know how can a word-of-mouth or rumor spread as fast and broad as a contagious virus?

Do you know how could a fashion trend spread like an epidemic across the country within a short span of time?

Do you know what trigger such epidemics and why some lasted only for a short period of time while others remained for decades?

Well, “The Tipping Point” by Malcolm Gladwell, is a book dedicated to explain how a trend is triggered to spread like an epidemic and tip in a society, and why some of the trend lasted only for a short time while others remained for decades.

There are generally three rules to observe in studying the pattern of an epidemic:

The Three Rules of Epidemics

According to Gladwell, there are three basic rules of epidemics:

1) The Law of The Few;

2) The Stickiness Factor; and

3) The Power of Context.

Having read the book, I find the messages conveyed are worth sharing here as they sharpen my very initial perspectives of businesses and, particularly, marketing strategies. To summarize the book in a single article here is too simplistic and rather lengthy, hence I find it rather practical to share with my friends a very interesting and revealing aspect of the book - The Law of the Few.

A rumor, trend or epidemic is not normally originated by ordinary persons like you and me. These trends are specifically driven by a few exceptional people in the society. More often than not, these very few exceptional people are themselves unaware of their importance in spreading a particular epidemic, though they are the few vital stimulus to the epidemics.

The Law of the Few (Connectors, Mavens, and Salesman)

“They are driven by the efforts of a handful of exceptional people.” Gladwell says.

An epidemic is spread and driven not by a large pool of people, but a few exceptional people. These few exceptional people are the ones who are responsible for tipping a trend which spread like a contagious virus. They are the trend translators who translate a new activity/product/service to the language that we can easily understand and comfortably follow suit.

Generally, there are three groups of these exceptional people.

First Group - Connectors

The first group of people is called Connectors. They are the ones who connect you to the world of others. Most of us are surrounded by a few connectors in our social network; they are the ones who introduce you new friends, whom you find it not possible to get to know because of different professions or place of residence.

Besides, they are the ones related in many of the friendships you are having right now e.g. Ali is my friend because of Peter, and I know Peter because of Ken. In turn, I know Ken because of Jack (Connecter), who introduced him to me 2 years ago. In short, they are the most socially connected persons around you.

“Acquaintances, in short, represent a source of social power, and the more acquaintances you have the more powerful you are. We rely on them to give us access to opportunities and worlds to which we don't belong.”

Second Group - Mavens

The word Maven comes from the Yiddish, and it means one who accumulate knowledge. These are the people having the most information about a particular product/service/sale. A simple way to identify them is to recognize the ones who are always there telling you a particular promotion of a product or sale in a particular store.

Mavens are not passive collector of information, they are obsessed with how to get the best deal on a can of coffee.

“What sets them apart is that once they figure out how to get that deal, they want to tell you about it too.”

Remember when you are hesitant about buying either an iphone or blackberry, you would normally consult a friend of yours for his advice. Well, he is the Maven in the field of technology.

Do you know another Maven in another field? I’m sure you do.

Third Group - Salesman

They are the most persuasive person in the planet. They are the ones whom you always agree with. Sometimes, it is not what they say matters, but how they present their points matter more in gaining your agreement or acceptance. They are certainly the ones who needed in your company to promote your products, simply because they can persuade your customers.

These are the people whom The Law of The Few means. They are the key people carrying contagious information and they are the ones responsible to turn a simple message into highly contagious information or epidemic.

Intending to create a higher sense of awareness about your products, services or company in a highly digitized world in a most effective way possible?

Look for these few people!

Why is our brain so big?

A revealing answer obtained from the book, "The Tipping Point" by Malcolm Galdwell, to the mystery that why our brains are the biggest among all mammals, even some of us don't really use it.

Unexpectedly, the answer, a British anthropologist Robin Dunbar argues, is group size.

"If you look at any species of primate - at every variety of monkey and ape - the larger their neocortex is, the larger the average size of the groups they live with. " Dunbar says.

The argument is that brains evolve, they get bigger, in order to handle the complexities of larger social group.

Logic seems to fit in the argument. Wait! Does it mean that our brains are getting bigger and bigger over time in order to handle the complexities of larger social group? Does it mean that the more friends we need to handle, the bigger our brains (indirectly, our heads) become?

Pity our future generations.(smiley face)

Nevertheless, Dunbar doesn't stop there.

"If you plug in the neocortex ratio for Homo Sapiens, you get a group estimate of 147.8 - or roughly 150."

"The figure of 150 seems to represent the maximum number of individuals with whom we can have a genuinely social relationship, the kind of relationship that goes with knowing who they are and how they relate to us, putting it another way, it is the number of people you would not feel embarrassed about joining uninvited for a drink if you happened to bump into them in a bar." He says.

So, do you have more than 150 good friends?

Mind you, if you do, do consider unfriending them, cause it could make you a big head monster someday =p

Part I
GENERAL

Effect of the Constitution

1. (1) This Constitution shall bind every member of the Union.
Provided that it shall not be inconsistent with the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971, the Constitution of University of Malaya, any Statute, Rules or Regulations of the University of Malaya.

(2) This Constitution stipulates the rights and obligations of every member of the Union and the URC.

Interpretation

2. In this Constitution, unless the context otherwise requires ──

“Board” means the board of Directors of the University of Malaya;

“Constitution” means the Constitution of the Union;

“Executive Committee” means the four office-bearers of the URC as elected under Article 5(1) of the Constitution;

“General Meeting” means any meeting called by the Executive Committee whereupon every member has been invited to attend and vote on any motion put forward;

“Independent Commission” means a commission independent from URC established by the Vice-Chancellor to conduct investigations on the matter referred to and propose recommendations;

“Member” means the member of the URC;

“Registered Student” means a student who is following a course of study in the University for a degree or a diploma, not being a post-graduate diploma, and includes a student who is a holder of a diploma and is following a course of study for a degree:

Provided that a student shall cease to be a registered student within the meaning of this subsection ──

(a) upon the publication of the results of the final examination for such course of study, if he passes such examination; or
(b) upon the publication of the results of any examination for such course of study, if he fails such examination, until he is, thereafter, registered again for that or another course of study applicable to a registered student under this subsection.

“Show of just cause” means any reason, justification or explanation in written form supporting any proposal, policy, or decision of the URC;

“Union” means the Undergraduates’ Union of the University of Malaya;

“URC Project” means any project, event or activity approved and managed by the URC;

“URC” means the Undergraduates’ Representative Council;

“Vice-Chancellor” means the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malaya.

Part II
The Union

Election

3. (1) The registered students of the University, other than external students, shall together constitute a body to be known as the Undergraduates’ Union of the University.

(2) The Union shall elect the URC in the following manner:

(a) the registered students of each Faculty, School, Centre, Academy and Institute shall elect by secret ballot conducted by the Dean of the Faculty or the Head of the School, Centre, Academy or Institute, as the case may be, such uniform number, as may be determined by the Vice-Chancellor, of registered students of the respective Faculty, School, Centre, Academy and
Institute to be representatives in the URC; and

(b) the registered students as a whole shall elect by secret ballot conducted by any officer appointed by the Vice-Chancellor for that purpose such number of registered students to be representatives in the URC as may be determined by the Vice-Chancellor, being, in any case, not more than half of the number of representatives elected under paragraph (a).

The objects and functions of the Union

4. The objects and functions of the Union shall be ──

(a) to foster a spirit of corporate life among the students of the University;

(b) to organize and supervise, subject to the direction of the Vice-Chancellor, student welfare facilities in the University including recreational facilities, spiritual and religious activities, and the supply of meals and refreshments;

(c) to make representations to the Vice-Chancellor on all matters relating to, or connected with, the living and working conditions of the students of the University;

(d) to be represented on any body which may, in accordance with Rules made by the Board for the purpose, be appointed to undertake student welfare activities in the University; and

(e) to undertake such other activities as may be determined by the Board from time to time.

Part III
The URC

Executive Committee

5. (1) The URC shall elect from among its members a President, a Vice-President, Secretary and a Treasurer by way of secret ballot, who shall be its only office-bearers forming the Executive Committee.

(2) The Executive Committee elected under Clause (1) shall be from those who are elected under Article 3(2)(b).

(3) The office-bearers of URC other than those elected under Clause (1) shall otherwise be authorised in writing by the Vice-Chancellor and the office-bearers so authorized shall be elected by the URC from the members of the URC.

(4) The election of the office-bearers under Clause (1) and (3) shall be taken by a majority vote with not less than two thirds of the members being present and voting.

(5) The members of the URC and its office-bearers shall be elected for one year, and the commencement date of such office-bearers shall take effect retrospectively from the day of election.

(6) No student against whom disciplinary proceedings are pending, or who has been found guilty of a disciplinary offence, shall remain a member of the URC, unless authorized in writing by the Vice-Chancellor.

(7) The URC shall hold meetings from time to time as it may deem necessary and it shall be the duty of the Secretary to keep minutes of every meeting of the URC and such minutes shall be confirmed at a subsequent meeting.

Fund

6. (1) The URC maintain a fund of the Union which shall consist of subscriptions paid by members of the Union, as may be determined on the constitution of the Union, and donations received from persons and organisations approved by the Board.

(2) The fund of the Union shall be expended in accordance with Clause (3) and the provisions of the Constitution and no payment from the fund shall be made unless written claims are made and supported by receipts and vouchers.

(3) The fund of the Union may be expended for payment of administrative costs of the Union, including audit of its account, and fro any payment connected with or arising out of the carrying out of its objects and functions as specified in Article (4).

(4) Nothing contained in Clause (1), (2) and (3) shall entitle the Union or the URC or any of its
members or office bearers to apply the fund of the Union, whether directly or indirectly, for the promotion of the objects of a political party or a trade union body or an organisation to which it is not affiliated.

(5) The Treasurer shall keep proper accounts of the URC and not later than three months after the end of every financial year, being a financial year as specified by the Vice-Chancellor, a copy of the said accounts which shall be audited by a person appointed by the Board shall be submitted by the URC for approval to the Board.

PART IV
RIGHTS OF THE MEMBERS

Right to propose, vote and pass motions

7. (1) Every member has the right to propose and vote on any motion in all General
Meetings.

(2) The URC’s decision shall be taken by a majority vote with not less than two-third of the members being present and voting.

(3) The right to vote shall either be exercised by a show of hands or, upon agreement by simple majority of members present, by secret ballot.

(4) The right to vote upon a specific matter put forward during General Meetings shall not be assigned to another member.

Right to propose motions during General Meetings

8. (1) Every member has the right to propose a motion or motions with a show of just cause.

(2) The right to propose motions shall include, but is not limited to, the following:

(a) to object to any policy, decision or action made, whether executed or not, by the Executive Committee, and includes, but not limited to the following matters:

(i) appointment of Sub-Committee members and Project Directors;
(ii) selection of ad-hoc committee members for any URC project;
(iii) approval or management of any URC project;
(iv) statement, resolution or any express representation made by the Executive Committee;

(b) to object any policy, decision or action made, whether executed or not, by the ad-hoc committee of any URC project;

(c) to review the whole, or a part, of the running of any URC Project;

(d) to initiate a new URC Project, provided that it shall not, directly or indirectly, overlap or compete with any existing URC Project;

(e) to recommend the removal of a Project Director, Sub-Committee member, or any member of any URC Project; or

(f) to submit any matter concerning the affairs of any URC Project to the Dispute Resolution Mechanism as provided under Article 28.

(3) All the motions made under this Article shall be seconded by another member.

Right to initiate General Meetings

9. (1) Every member has the right to initiate a General Meeting via one of members of the Executive Committee through a written memorandum supported by simple majority of the total members.

(2) Upon the failure of the Executive Committee to hold a General Meeting after a successful written memorandum as provided in Clause (1), the members have the right to hold and chair a General Meeting with or without the presence of the Executive Committee, and that the chairman shall be elected by a simple majority of members present.

Right to attend General Meetings

10. (1) Every member has the right to attend any General Meeting.

(2) Every member has the right to reschedule the date of any General Meeting with a show of just cause and accompanied by a written memorandum supported by a simple majority of the total members.

Right to examine accounts

11. (1) Every member has the right to examine the accounts of the URC, or any URC Project, with or without show of just cause.

(2) The members may pass a motion requesting for the establishment of an Audit Committee in which its committee members shall be elected through a General Meeting by simple majority of members present to be entrusted with the task of auditing the accounts of the URC.

Right to participate in any URC Project

12. (1) Every member has the right to participate in any URC Project as an ad-hoc
committee member.

(2) Every member has the right to attend any interview conducted by URC to recruit ad-hoc committee members for any URC Project.

(3) Every member has the right to propose a date, or object to a proposed date, of any event or activity organised under any URC Project, provided that such proposal or objection is made by show of just cause.

(4) Every member has the right to refer any matter relating to the general affairs and running of any URC Project to the dispute resolution mechanism as provided in Part VII of this
Constitution.

Right to refer member to the Independent Commission

13. (1) Every member has the right to propose and vote a motion to refer any member of URC to the Independent Commission if ──

(a) the member has been absent from the General Meeting for two consecutive times without any valid reason;

(b) the member has said or done anything that is prejudicial against the interest and reputation of URC;

(c) the member has neglected or refused to perform his duties and obligations of URC.

(2) A motion under Clause (1) shall be made in writing with the support of at least two-thirds of the total members.

PART V
POWERS AND DUTIES OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

Power to hold General Meeting

14. (1) The Executive Committee has the power to hold General Meeting upon –

(a) a motion of any member or members in accordance with Article 8(1);

(b) its own initiative with a simple majority support from the Executive Committee.

(2) Subject to Article 10(2), the Executive Committee has the power to determine the date and time of General Meetings.

(3) The Executive Committee has the power to appoint any member to chair the General Meetings.

Power to approve URC project

15. (1) The Executive Committee has the power, subject to Article 8(2)(a)(iii), to approve all
URC projects.

(2) The Executive Committee has the power to delegate its functions and responsibilities
of any URC project to an ad-hoc committee headed by a Project Director.

Power of appointment

16. (1) The Executive Committee has the power to appoint Project Directors to manage any
URC Project.

(2) The Executive Committee has the power to appoint Sub-Committee members to assist in its work.

The Executive Committee shall ──

17. (1) implement immediately and accordingly any motion that has been passed during a
General Meeting in accordance with Article 7;

(2) communicate any of its policy or decision, with sufficient notice, to its members as soon as may be, except if a duration has been expressly provided on a specific matter in this Constitution;

(3) hold, at least, one General Meeting every month during the academic semesters;

(4) hold a General Meeting upon receiving a successful written memorandum proposing to initiate a General Meeting from the members in accordance with Article 9(1);

(5) reschedule any General Meeting accordingly from the original date to a new date upon receiving a successful written memorandum proposing to reschedule the General Meeting from the members in accordance with Article 10(2);

(6) reveal the accounts of the URC upon request of any member in the exercise of his rights under Article 11(1) no later than one week after the date of request;

(7) reveal the accounts of the URC in its updated form in all the General Meetings; and

PART VI
INDEPENDENT COMMISSION

Committee

18. (1) The committee member of the Independent Commission shall consist of ──

(a) a Deputy Registrar from Students’ Affair and Alumni Department; and
(b) a member from the Faculty of Law, University of Malaya; and
(c) a professor from University of Malaya, who shall be determined by the Vice-Chancellor.

(2) The Independent Commission shall be established by the Vice-Chancellor within 20 days from such date as the motion of referral under Article 13 is successfully passed.

Punishment

19. A member who has been found to contravene any of the grounds under Article 13 shall be liable to any one or both of the following punishments:

(1) A warning;
(2) Suspension from being a member of URC for a specified period not exceeding 60 days

20. Upon receiving the report of recommendation under Article 26, the Vice-Chancellor shall announce his decision of any of the punishments under Article 19 within 20 working days.

Attendance before Independent Commission

21. The Independent Commission shall notify the referred member of the alleged offence and therein require the member to attend before it on a specified date, time and venue.

Consequence of failure to attend before Independent Commission

22. Where a member fails to attend before the Independent Commission in accordance with Article 20, he shall immediately be suspended from being a member of URC and such suspension shall continue until such member offers to attend before the Independent Commission and does, in fact, attend before the Independent Commission on the date and at the time which the Independent Commission may specify after the member has offered to attend before the
Independent Commission.

Explanation of facts and taking of plea

23. At the hearing, the Independent Commission shall explain to the member the facts of the offence alleged to have been committed by the member and call him to plead thereto.

Member’s evidence

24. If the Independent Commission finds that there is a case to answer, the member shall be invited to give his evidence, call any witness or produce any document or other article in his defence; the Independent Commission may question the member or any of his witnesses and inspect any such document or article, and the member may re-examine any of his witnesses.

Recall of witness

25. The Independent Commission may question or recall any witness at any time before it recommends proper punishment to the Vice-Chancellor.

Submission of Report of Recommendation

26. After hearing the witnesses and examining the documents or other articles produced before it, the Independent Commission shall submit a report of recommendation of punishments specified in Article 19 to the Vice-Chancellor within 5 working days.

Report of Recommendation to faculty or institution, etc.

27. (1) The Independent Commission shall send a copy of the report of recommendation in respect of the hearing to the ──

(a) Deputy Vice-Chacellor of Students’ Affair and Alumni Department; and
(b) Dean of the Faculty or Institution in which the member study

PART VII
DISPUTE RESOLUTION

Mechanism to address any arising matters related to URC Projects

28. (1) The Executive Committee shall be the first to deliberate and decide on any matter
brought forward by a member relating to the general affairs of any URC Project through the exercise of his rights under Article 8(2)(f).

(2) The decision of the Executive Committee made pursuant to Clause (1) shall be communicated to the members within 7 days from the date of the decision.

(3) After the decision has been made by the Executive Committee pursuant Clause (1), or if no decision is made within a week, any member may propose a motion under Article 7 to refer the matter, with show of just cause, to the General Meeting.

PART VIII
AMENDMENT OR REVOCATION OF THE CONSTITUTION

Procedure of amending or revoking the Constitution

29. (1) Any Article in this Constitution is subject to any amendment or revocation effected
through a motion successfully passed during the General Meeting.

(2) Any motion to amend or revoke the Constitution shall only be passed if it is passed
by two-thirds majority of members present in a General Meeting with a quorum of more than two thirds of the total members.

(3) The amendment or revocation shall be approved by the Board and shall not have effect until so approved.

Comfort zone

Improvement and creativity of a person is always buried beneath the soil of comfort zone. Instead, people living out of the zone are always exposed to adventures which would ultimately lead him to a greater success.

Coming from an average income family, I always live in the zone bearing no worries about survival in all levels. A strong back-up from my family has certainly assured me a free-hold title of the comfort zone.

This is what shuts the door of innovation and advancement.

Out of my comfort zone

I used to have 5 different bank accounts of which each contains thousand bucks$$. With the idea of saving money for education by enrolling myself in one of the public university, I have had a perception that my parents and I have saved a lot of money because study in private colleges would cost me about 5 times more than what I am paying. The zone I used to live in was even stronger with the support of governmental loan.

The ease and comfort led me to indulge myself in shopping, clubbing and travelling which I poured much money in without much hesitation. Since the enrollment into the university in year 2008, I had always no idea how much money I actually possessed until the golden year of 2010, amazing huh??

Now, I have only one account with sufficient credit for withdrawal, the other four aren’t allowed due to insufficient fund.

Involuntarily, this forces me to seek the ultimate support from my parents which makes me feel suck!

The Door is opening…

I started to look for part-time jobs and attended a few interviews. These events provide me a good opportunity to adventure and discover chances of success. In few days’ time, I have known a few friends each has his distinctive qualities for me to learn from. Each of them comes from different background and pursuing different goals. However, they do share a common thing- determined to succeed.

Being poor is sometimes a fortunate thing because it can drive you closer to the success you desire.

It triggers all your potentials and giving you ample chances to understand yourself more.
It connects you with people from all walks of life.
It strengthens your desire and enthusiasm to pursue your goals.
It opens the door of innovation and advancement.

And It makes you successful.

Truth is always hidden, you can`t see it with your eyes, but you can see it with your heart..

When one is in position of power, he is being judged and compared with others. It is a form of unseen and uncatchable force exhausting the judged ones.

Each one has his exclusive and unique way of execution of faith, so as I.

I don’t talk much, I don`t write much, I don`t facebook much either as I dislike telling everyone everything I am doing. Sorry if i`m not in the majority.

But it doesn`t form a basis for measurement of one`s performances.

A great singer can never make his greatest performance on the stage without the help from his trainer, the staffs working behind the scene and his fans` supports.

I may not be able to entertain you on the stage like the singer, but I am always there working, in front or behind, to ensure you get entertained, because I know this is my obligation.

I prefer this way as I don’t believe singing loudly and frequently before his audience is the only way to entertain the audience.

I have my words on you, I remember vividly.

And I never forget my obligation though I am in love. >.<

Astronaut??? have I listened wrongly?

Malaysia is a developing country (*emphasis) which still needs a lot of hard work and time to advance itself and to put itself at par with other developed countries.

Emulation is one of the ways of improvement as it would have saved much time of research. However, to merely acquire what other countries have by paying an exorbitant price is called Stupid, or Bullshit!

If you are free enough to travel, please travel to some rural areas of our very own country, ( you are very welcome to visit my hometown> Tenang Station, Segamat ) and you will see that the rate of poverty is still High, especially among the Indian community. There is no need to have a statistic to indicate the exact percentage of poverty in the country, u will know there is a high rate of poverty by merely visiting some estates in rural areas, see how they lead their lives there ..

When our very own people are struggling for their lives, our government of “integrity and efficiency” which professes the slogan of ~Rakyat First~ chose to invest Thousands of Millions to send a man to the space ( with unclear objectives ). I only remember the *astronaut* brought some Roti canai and Malaysian food along to show off..

While the mission has been accomplished,

~ First Astronaut in Malaysia ~ appeared headlines across the nation ( proudly), but I wasn`t felt happy because I was imaging the scene of a group of Russian officials smiling at the huge pile of money they received from Malaysia, which money we can use for better purposes..

PLEASE!! Our beloved Politician, use your BRAIN please…

How much our country spent for building the Twin Tower( KLCC ) which is designed by foreigners? How much our country spent for having our own F-One race? How much our government spend to buy the Russian`s helicopters? How much else you want to spend while your own citizens are starving out there?

Why not spending the money for the education by sending students to learn about Astronautics, rather than buying the ticket with millions ringgit? Why not spending money to train designers and engineers to build our own marvelous building? Rather than paying millions to foreign engineers and designers..

Singapore is economically better off Malaysia, and they have talented and knowledgeable people to learn about astronautics. But why they are not pursuing this even though they have managed their country so well? It is rather simple, they are not ready for that and there are a lot more to be done to improve their own country first, before thinking about sending people to the space…

A baby crawls before stand; a toddler walks before run.

Economic, Education, Healthcare, Development and Social Welfare are all at stake in our country.

Please manage well your own country first before thinking about flying….

Past or Future

If you were given an option to travel back to the past or future with your existing knowledge and your life starts there and then, which do you choose?

To start your life all over again at some point in the past or enter into a whole new phrase of life which is most unimaginable are both exciting and challenging.

I like to be a man and I love living on this earth, so I do appreciate every moment in my life. Each piece of the memories like each page of a good story book, it can’t do if any page of the book goes missing. Thank them; I am what I am today.

Consider the nature and value of life, I would choose to travel back to the past rather than future. Time is priceless, I would not want to lose the time frame between the presence and the future cause I might have done something significant and meaningful.

If I were to go back to the past, I really hope that I could start my life from primary school where I have retained so much amazing memories. I miss all my friends` look in that ages and I miss the worriless life.

I want to tell my class teacher that I know about Federal Constitution. I also want to ask my teachers to teach me something i duno or something harder.*bangga* And I want to tell all my friends that I love them.

Besides, I would do what a child at that age wouldn’t do!! That`s amazing…

I also miss my parents` young look and I want to mind them not to commit any mistakes that they have actually made in the future. I want to cycle around my hometown with my friends and tell them it is fun. And I want to tell my friends and parents that I will become a lawyer.

I know.. the sad part of travelling back to the past is the feeling of excitement and curiosity is extinguished. No matter what, I would try my best to get know of those good friends and tell them I do appreciate them.

And I would do what I had not done in the past to gain new experience and friends. To start a life all over again might be tedious, yet it can sometimes be exciting and meaningful… it is much dependant on how we view it and how we go along with it.

There is a matter that I will do in the past, I am sure that I will get to know her and get her fall in me once again, and I will tell her that I kissed her before even she knows me.. in the future..

Perhaps, she would still be with me who claims to come from the future…

Anyway, it is too hypothetical to imagine such an option. Being able to live in the present life with all the necessity provided is already a most wonderful gift given. Because….

To live in presence with all our acquaintances and loved ones is the best option ever given..

TANJUNG MALIM, March 28 - Malays have the right to support any non-governmental organisation (NGO) which they think is fighting for their cause as long as the NGO is not politicised and involved in controversial issues, Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said.

“If the struggle is not politicised or saddled with controversial problems, the
Malays will be able to support it and the values it carries,”

My personal view on these statements

Yes! I am in total agreement with the proposition that Malays have the right to support any organization which fight for their beliefs because I think everyone deserves this right disregard of his race or background. This is a right inherent in every individual and not given by any person or statute.

What I want to stress here is the allegation of “ as long as the NGO is not politicized and involved in controversial issues”.

PERKASA is a non-governmental organization established with the purposes of fighting for the Malays` rights and preserves the status quo of Malay Language without being affected by any political affiliation.

Strange, the said organization has been so closely associated with politicians. It confuses me how to define "politicize" Even more strange, the purpose of the establishment is to defend a matter which is commonly considered as SENSITIVE ISSUES, ie, Malays` rights. It confuses me further what is controversial matters.

Logically and reasonably anticipated, whatever program launched by the organization is aimed to defend such rights.

I am not saying here that no organization should be established with the aim of defending its beliefs; I am just feeling weird that such organization is allowed openly and even with the supports of politician to discuss a matter which is likely to arouse the dissatisfaction of Non-Malays.

As a Malaysian, I have been staying in Malaysia for more than two decades; I know well that such privileges are needed to preserve the order of the country and it is sometimes vital to certain quarters of people to live their lives better. Even though I am quite disagree with this way of solving the problem of unbalance between the two main groups.

Frankly, I dislike the belief of Supremacy of Malay! As our Federal Constitution stated unequivocally that all persons are equal before the law and entitled to the equal protection of the law. Strange again, why such belief is so broadly propagated and promulgated across the region.

Back to the history when Whiteman conquered our land and forced their rules and beliefs upon us, they considered themselves as better, greater and more supreme to us. Even at the present, such belief is remained among the some.

Should a person superior than the other on the basis of his race? I cannot agree.

Back to the issue of the statement made by our unbiased and fairly chosen politician, any sane one would know that any allegation made to support the Supremacy of Malay or defending the Malays` rights would cause the uneasiness of Non-Malay in the country.

Then why such movements can be so strongly supported, even by the government officers.

and I really find it hard to reconcile all these occurrences with the 1 Malaysia concept.

Who am i ? what impression have i given to the people surrounding me? does the present me differ from the first-year me? a few of them told me this and a sense of mine convinced me this.

Yes, i am changed!

i used to have full preparation for any test/exam, i used to prepare for tutorial classes and i used to tell myself to read/study more so that i can be a great lawyer in the future. I always think that proficiency of English language and good understanding of law are the main yardstick for the competency of a legal professions. So, i try to improve myself with the aim of being a competent lawyer by putting extra focus in my legal study. i study for the knowledge, not for the result.

Now, i realise a change in myself regarding this belief. i dun put extra effort in my study anymore and i dun study solely for the knowledge, yet the result has formed a great part of my consideration. What i want now is only to obtain a minimum/standard result good enough for me to get a job in the future, as I have contemplated something else which I believe are more important than study.

“ you will never be ready if you dun take the initiative to be ready..” he said,

Yes! It`s the time, I decided to do it and I am doing it. Really unbelievable.

I need to learn now as I realize that I have so many things to learn. To internalize myself with the skills learned from projects, especially interpersonal skills have now become my main consideration.

In Love, I am changed too. The old me who only look for fun and happiness per se have passed away. Now, I want something different. Seriously, life is short. I am not going to waste much time anymore. It`s time for me to Love. And I do love her now..

In family, I am the youngest son. So I get more things than my bros and sis. Being more fortunate, I know that I should appreciate all these things and be a good son to my parents. My dad is 61 and my mon is 59. I know well that they are not going to be with me in the next few decades, 10 or 20 or 30 years more? No one knows… I know well too that I will be extremely regretful if I dun be a good son now…

In friendship, my dad told me not to be too kind to your friends as they are not as kind as your siblings, they won`t help you much when you need help… which I find it very wrong! Friends are not solely meant for getting help. It`s much more than that, being with your closest friends, sharing your life with them, is one of the most blissful things in life. And I will never forget all the best moment with my friends, they help me to grow up and learn. And they will be with me whenever I need them.. Thanks, my friends…

And I will go lim teh with my best friends, sharing our live`s stories.. and I will tell my sons and grandsons about my stories and tell them, dun wait to do whatever you really feel like to do!!! You can never wait to be a good son…..

An unknown number of scholars, writers, religionist, intellectualist, emotionalist and even judges have attempted over the centuries to define the meaning of marriage for various reasons and purposes. It differs from one perspective to another and from one region to another. Despite all the efforts and time given, the long hidden meaning of marriage is still a mystery to most people.

Why there is a need to document a union of two persons?

Undeniably, a legally documented marriage provides unsecured people a form of security over the union. These people feel secured simply for the reason that the very existence of a piece of paper indicating the status of the two which rendering them legally attached to each other makes them feel that his or her partner is now exclusively his or her, which is thought as a good security.

Another reason, it makes life easier with a legal marriage in some legal aspects. A child born out of wedlock is named bustard or unlawful child, a term which is most prejudicial and discriminating to the innocent human being. Magically, the paper is able to change their status and furnishes the child great statutory benefits.

The aspects of commitment and responsibility between the two persons have been discussed most frequently to justify the formation of a marriage. A marriage is said to have a mysterious effect upon the groom and bride to have greater commitment, responsibility and royalty towards the other.

These views are true and very true to support the ideal of marriage. But, somehow, I think these factors are not the essence of a marriage. The reasons given, which I think, are not strong and justifiable enough to enter into a lifelong partnership – a marriage.

I agree with the fact that it is a form of formality, but I do advocate that it is more than mere formality.

Love is immeasurable and ambiguous. No precise definition can be given and no man can utterly apprehend the meaning. Whatever and however each human being defines his own meaning of love, I cannot help…

Some people say it is a way of expression of one`s love towards another, or perhaps, one`s determination to live with another to his last breath. I wonder whether it is a good ground as there are many other ways of expression, but I view it as a better reason than the grounds of formality, convenience or security.

One ever suggested to me that marriage dilutes romanticism as one would less appreciate the other, I agree that it does has the said effect in many cases based on what I have witnessed marriages over the years. But, I think mere cohabitation doesn`t guarantee the existence of the spirits and it is too not a good way to ensure your partner to be romantic all the while.

Each one has a role to play whether the union between the two is documented or not. To live together, better communication and understanding are far more essential than a piece of paper.

Anyhow, indescribably, marriage is more than mere formality.

With the estimated life span of 80 years, I have completed 26.25 percent. At this young stage of the process, as I hold my step back and recall thoroughly the past achievements, failure, success and those unforgettable memories, a surge of melancholy sense marches through all my nerves which I can feel a lingering sense of sadness; a kind of blurred feelings and a sort of nostalgic nerves which I cannot understand.

Try to close my struggling eyes, mouth and ears to cut off any link with the lively life. Silence becomes my song and motion becomes my enemy. Attention is well focused for the uncertain aims. Memories of the past occur to me effortlessly; Scenes of joy and sadness appear even more vividly without demand. I realize then, I miss...

There is neither way back nor could it happen exactly the same again, so the precious scenes should not be kept in vain. Lessons are there available to be taken and living now with spontaneity is the lesson which I learn most from us.

I cannot forget the funny us, the sad us, the crazy us and the stupid us..

and I will not forget to appreciate whichever of us..

Again, the notorious narrow-minded mentality and thoughtless acts of those “ God Guardian ” have labeled our nation another layer of extremism and fanaticism. A whole new decade casts a cogent piece of proof of the deterioration in our nation mindsets.

Saddened and helpless, I can only yell at the air, “ MALAYSIA BOLEH !!!”

Since the moment I could analyze or at least think more critically, I doubt the very existence of religion or religions has in anyway vital in my life. I wonder the reasons of having faith in Him, I wonder the implications of not having Him with us, I wonder the differences of our life with and without Him, and the objective of having Him is, among all, the doubt most eagerly to be unearthed.

As uncertain as it may seem, the most possible basis for having Him to be with us is to be of assistance in behaving ourselves so as to be able to live harmoniously with one another regardless of each difference.

Perhaps, this is His will. I can only guess, and I think nobody can be utterly assured of His will. However, I can be quite sure that He doesn’t want to see chaos or hatred among us. I think He shares something common with all of us, He wants to see…

Peace.

The people out there, those who serve your God genuinely, those who defend your God mercilessly against any possible erosion of your faith, please take a step back and think, think like a human being, think of the possible wills of your God and think what does He wants to see???

Does He ever want you to hurt, defame, burn and kill to save His name?

人类很奇怪；或者是说有感觉的生物都很奇怪。理智是智慧的领导者，但情绪未必是败者的前锋，两种拥有北与南极距离的情感，离奇的需要对方的支配与宽恕。

遇见了，发现了，决定了，感觉了，就一起了。。

当两人决定了一起，理智为了情绪放下了自己的领导岗位，向着充满奇迹的未来迈进。感觉无声的启动爱的引擎，强悍不停的推动力，将彼此大幅度的拉近。

一个念头，一个决定，理想中的永远是多么的梦幻还是那么的甜蜜？时间不停的，不同情的，向前奔跑，错过的记忆与感觉只能叹气的回想，但未来的记忆还在我们手中，由你与我一同摆布。

A New Path…

I can still remember the old me in the old days, who having a very different kind of mindset and living for a distinct purpose of life. Fun is the motivation of all. Result is nothing.

Time elapses from moment to moment; human grows from time to time. Change is constant and inevitable. I am too not excluded from this universal rule and I feel good about it.

Having had such an experience, I realize well what I need the most for the coming days. In this point of time, I am offered such a precious opportunity to change myself and embrace the differences. A prospective
future awaits me in a few steps` distance and I tell myself,

“I am not going to waste this chance anymore to step forward in the direction of my ideal future.”

People doubt the sincerity, the security and the sustainability of my vision, yet I have a clear and certain decision ever made for myself. To tell them the truth is an unnecessary move, time can be of great assistance in the future.

I`ve decided to take this move, wholeheartedly. And I believe very well that I can succeed in this very undertaking.

Destiny paves a path for me, it`s now for me..

Relationship . Not a burden.

A logical or natural association between two things or more; it doesn’t speak of itself nor it can well be expressed by words, yet it conveys a sort of wonderful feeling which is not possible to be derived from a mere state of thing.

It is like the word of water, you can neither sense it nor feel it by writing or reading the word. There is no way but to touch it.

Getting yourself in a relationship is much the same like placing yourself in a state of fantasy or living in a world of another. The captain of the mind would be gone missing and the mind would start losing its way to the jetty. Everything is then under the control of impulse, especially when the thunderstorm comes. The only possible way of salvation is to stand still, anchors the unstable mind in midst of the furious sea and recover its direction and calmness. Eventually, mostly, the way would be found and the place would be reached, blissfully.

Being in love is never a type of feeling describable by words or speeches. Like water, it needs intimate link and connection, both physically and spiritually. To sense or feel it, personal involvement is inevitable. To enrich or flourish it, intimacy is uncompromisable.

Certain requirements are alleged to be vital to maintain a relationship, particularly that of love. Commitment is always on top of the list. Loyalty, patience, certainty, time, cost, energy and many more internal as well as external considerations are taken into account to ascertain and evaluate its sustainability as well as its worthiness.

A certain group of people, after considering the commitments, taking the view of being in relationship is actually an extra burden in life, especially those people who can never compromise their freedom and time for someone else. Undeniably, a great responsibility is presumed right the moment of acceptance of another. Saying yes or asking for yes is virtually the same in the context of responsibility; it is imputed upon both parties once they come into a consensus; to love each other.

Life can be very simple and complicated. Perspective differentiates between the two.

By regarding a relationship of such nature as a sort of burden in life, everything else would be inescapably regarded as a burden and the remuneration of such view is a depressed and downhearted life.

Having had such a view, an irresistible and sparkling sport car will be viewed as a burden because it needed petrol to run it, it needed time and energy to look after it; it needed money to maintain it and it just needed so much effort to possess it.

Having had such a view, a friend of yours will be a burden because it needed time to form a good friendship, it needed energy to look after him, it needed money to spend for his birthday gifts, it needed time and patience to hear from him and it just needed so much effort to have a friend, especially a good one.

Having had such a view, your own parents will be the greatest burden because you can never give up them, it needed time, energy, love and almost every resource that you have to look after them, and you are obliged to be a good son, listening and following their wills.

Having had such a view, life would unquestionably be troublesome and getting involved in any kind of relationship would certainly be burdensome.

Even if it is well accepted and recognized that a particular type of relationship is indeed a burden by virtue of the disadvantages far more surpass the benefits, the ultimate outcome of being involved in such a relationship will justify most or even all of the shortcomings.

Burden is a bad word used to reflect the problems which one faces in the course of any relationship. Undeniably, it is sometimes frustrating and irritating by handling the problems posed by the relationship.

Nevertheless, it is what human needed to go through in life as it will eventually strengthen and enlighten the one who has gone through the whole process, who has tried his best to solve all the problems he met and who has lived his life.

Problems stimulate us to think of solutions. By thinking of the solutions, we strengthen ourselves. Once the problem is solved by your own solution, you get the satisfaction and most importantly; the ultimate happiness. Instead of burden, I prefer the word of challenge, which is more encouraging and motivating. By getting into a relationship, by solving the problems emanated from the relationship and by going through the whole process of relationship, life will be more interesting and wonderful.

The process is far more important than the end. At the age of 80 or more, you will be regretful if you have never done anything special or extraordinary or u once omitted to do something you wanted to.

Holding your loved one at the seaside, looking at the moon and stars in the middle of night, saying I Love You to her and hold her close to your chest, feel the love and feel the togetherness…

I guarantee such a night will be remembered and cherished for the rest of your life. No matter what obstacle you are encountering, no matter what burden you are shouldering, remember all these detriments or challenges are much worth encountered, together. It makes your life a better, special and unforgettable life.

Treasure and enjoy the process. End is nothing.

Life will be a real burden if there is no problem.

So, why bother so much…??

As a child, a sweet is a fortune; a toy is a good fortune; a fantastic game-boy is a big fortune; and having a PS-n is a great fortune. Whatever that can please the child; it can be regarded as a fortune.

The same goes to man and girl.

As a man, a car is a fortune; a mind of wit is a good fortune; a career of good perspective is a big fortune; and having a kind and beautiful wife is a great fortune. Whatever that can enlighten the man; it can be regarded as a fortune.

As a girl, a dress is a fortune; a marvelous appearance is a good fortune; a heart of kindness is a big fortune; and having a kind, thoughtful and rich husband is a great fortune. Whatever that can gratify the girl; it can be regarded as a fortune.

How about a sudden fortune?

A fortune that fallen out of a sudden without much anticipation. Something you thought as if it belongs to others, rather than yours. Being the lucky one how would you look and manage it? In what circumstances you believe it is a whole true stuff, not a dreamy one. To what extent that you believe that you are able to retain and treasure it?

There are not answered, yet the answer is immaterial.

When I have a fortune, whatever the form and shape it is as long as it pleases me, I would not waste my time, energy and any sort of resource to squander it.

Being complacent is the key to unlock the door of happiness.

To many people, he is a hero, too, an idiot.

Hero or idiot?

A well educated man may well sit comfortably in front of his laptop, enjoying the air-conditioning and sipping a cup of hot chocolate, watching the video and criticize the thoughtless act of the doer.

I know people who support the hero and I know too people condemning the moron. Personally, I would regard the act is excessive, unscrupulous and indecent. However, in my view, it is justified, for a true revolution.

There is always another way to solve a problem. Difference approaches are inevitable and the appropriateness and reasonableness of each method is just subjective.

To complain in such a way seemed to be excessive and improper. It provides no remedy and solution. Worse still, it worsens the situation.

But.. Mind the reason.

In Malaysia, I believe no one would bother to take the initiative to complain in such a situation with the belief that it is useless. Ask yourself, be frank, is it useless? Would u waste your resources just to listen to a reply which ensures nothing?

There are apparently two reasons for lack of complaints.

First- perfect, no problem at all. Second- hopeless, give up.

Such a problem is not resulted by days. Such an act would not be done by mere unhappiness. Such a complaint would not be lodged by a mere unsatisfactory feeling.

But only by reason of a long term of disappointment and oppression.

It is not the issue of breakdown or shutdown matters, but the attitudes. The attitudes toward the issues, the problem and the solution. To have a better Malaysia, a change of attitude is mandatory.

Don’t disappoint the one who feeds you.

The beauty of faith is much sought and yearned far back to the stone age. Religion – a gifted element of life which has myriad of forms and shapes. Its purpose, too, varies from place to place and from time to time.

It is a form of equivocal and ambiguous element to most human-being. A type of sacred and solemn belief to the majority. A sort of source powerful to the fanatics. A kind of stimulus to the manipulated. A guise of faith to peace.

A travesty of calmness to the needed.

Yes. It is universally accepted that most and almost all the religions having the similar principles and faiths – kindness, friendliness, generosity, warmth, sympathy, equality, liberty, moderation, patience, diligence…

No doubt a religion conglomerated of all these doctrines cannot possibly be rejected on any ground. Heaven, eternal life or the life after life are deemed and believed as the form of remuneration of the upholding and practice of such beliefs and hell is alleged the otherwise. These beliefs are all merely authenticated by written work passed from generation to generation. Believers across the land never concede and admit of the others and never stop claiming for the authenticity of their own.

Is there a god or gods?

The number is thought immaterial, but the substance and implication do. Adversity of human relation is the conceivable omen of ramification and divergence of faiths. The alike substance produces the unlike implications.

A loose relation drives us to the stage of doubt. A piece of doubt may send us to the field of misconception. A pure misconception can steer us to the state of insanity; staying lost in the darkness.

Differences should be and ought to be welcomed as it colours the life of mortal. Nevertheless, a colourful life compromised with the unfathomable destruction in the future should never be conceded.

The differences and feud between the “West” and the “Middle East” triggered the destructive war which rendering a ruinous and adverse impact on mankind. This is an unforgettable experience for them and should be a reminder for us; a precious and thoughtful lesson to differences.

Bear in mind the sacred faiths and beliefs.

To apprehend the differences.

To ascertain the extent acceptable to all.

To realize the results.

To promulgate a belief by having it yelled a few times per day at the public would only abrogate the aims and aggravate the worst. To extend the faiths into every single aspect of life would not welcome much profit but trouble.

Restriction by force is the release of devil. Peace is the encouragement and awareness of conscience, not the effect of stern regulation.

Be aware of the land on which you are living; mind the boundary of your steps. Any form of trespass would be watched and sin would be paid for the mindless step.

Mind the purpose. We want Peace.

It has never been my consideration for joining the least efficient and productive body – government. Today, my stand is shaken. The simple and only reason given is strong enough to steer my mind from this restricted view…

“It is not how many and how well you know the laws is important; it is now how many and how well you know the people is important. Being a good lawyer is to know the laws well; being a great lawyer is to know the judges well. That`s the distinction.”

Undecided. another piece of advice coming in, from a senior lawyer practicing law in his own film in Pinang.

Joining the government is an idealistic view. Don’t expect too much. People may not know u. worst still, they may dislike you.

After giving some thought on them…it can be concluded that..

Whichever field you are in; wherever direction you are pursuing; the lesson is; to know the people.

Constitution tutorial class always bores us, especially when we are already exhausted by the other classes. it would be a long-lasting and tedious ordeal. What`s more, we use our ears far more than our mouths, sitting in the cold and colorless room and to keep our half-opened eyes at the tutor for the monotone sermon.

but today, it was different. the question she posed really provoke my curiosity and aroused my interests on the subject.

It goes like this – whether it is justified for a suspect to be tortured in order to secure some important information for the prevention of a greater catastrophe. eg: destructive explosion or massive massacre.

Rule of Majority

It is indeed a question about the rule of majority – the public views reflect the “correct” or “rightful” ideas as the majority determines between right or wrong, just or unjust and reasonable or unreasonable.

When the majority allows the acts of torturing, bombing, killing or even raping , these acts become just, fair and reasonable. Likewise, if the majority contemns the acts of praying, greeting or even helping, these acts become unjust, unfair and unreasonable in that particular society.

So, it is vital to question whether the liberty of minority can be compromised for the interest of majority.

yes , I said yes , but not a simple YES per se. it comes with conditions.

besides, perspective of this issue differs from different characters. Being the closest one to the victim, torturing or any form of corporal forces in the process of interrogation is always protested as unjustified as it is utterly against human rights and unconstitutional in global sense. In view of the governor or administrator, a different story will be told to justify the acts in light of the public interests. A fair balance of both sides has to be drawn so as to provide a safe and peaceful environment on one side and to preserve human dignity on the other.

For her interests….

A vulnerable young daughter is prevented by her parents to go out at late night; would you argue for this pity girl that the acts of her parents have actually infringed her fundamental rights to freedom of movement guaranteed by our constitution? Sound absurd ??

Opinion will be different from the daughter and parents as the two different and distinct characters. As far as I am concerned, most societies allow such a restriction with the justification of the daughter`s interests. To deprive one of his inherent rights can sometime be justified. Yet, it is to be cautioned that the power conferred upon their parents has its limits. Eg. not to allow their daughter to go out at any point of time is beyond the limit.

The same applies in the society. Police conferred with the powers to detain any suspect to maintain the order of the public, it is so justified for the public interests. Likewise, no absolute powers can ever be granted. Police can not detain anyone as they please, nor torture.

Safeguards

So how it is possible to confer powers upon our state protectors to detain or even torture any suspect to preserve the interests of the public members? Inevitably, such a power would be abused for personal interests and subsequently leads to the abrogation of the ultimate objective of the conferment of such prerogatives. Human dignity and rights would be at stake and scuffle merges into life.

A well-known quotation “absolute powers corrupt absolutely” denotes well the danger of such abuse. Not absolute powers can ever be given without being abused. To draw a fine balance between the two can never be an easy task.

To protect the both interests, a fair and just legal system is inevitable. Reasonable guidelines must be followed in detaining any suspect. Yes, it sounds unpractical as it is subjective view and each police has his own standard of assessment. But, a more objective and fairer approach must be adopted. Reasonable grounds for the suspicion and detainment must be made mandatory and failure to provide so or provided not to the satisfaction of court should be penalized. A heavy penalty for such felony can bring about a trend of more stringent, prudent and efficient execution of their duties.

Besides, a general guideline for the ways of interrogation must be made and followed. Grievous and permanent injury can never be compromised. To ensure the abidance by the guidelines, the whole process of interrogation must be recorded to avoid inhumane torture. A severe punishment must be accorded with those infringing the guidelines so to convey the message of the importance of individual rights.

By the way.. the ideal country can only be in existence with the real and effective implementation of laws and policies.

today, each of us was required to do an impromptu speaking in the English class, an interesting session which I could learn how people prepare their talks and speak before us.

~ Everyone has done a good job and just keep it up ~

one may say so and leaves the class without putting much thought on what they have talked and how they have talked or even in what sense he could improve himself.

Sadly, but I must admit that we, as local graduates, are in BIG BIG trouble. Other than the two girls in the class, I would regard that the rest of us had failed the speaking, miserably.

Proudly, we are regarded as law student – the pioneer of the student, the leader of the crowd and the best of the bests. But sadly.. we couldn’t even manage to talk handsomely or beautifully in front of a small class of ten. Doubtful, we are going to be lawyers, whose tool is language and whose job is to impress others with our most valuable tool - language.

She was terribly and horribly nervous, almost to the extent of terrified. I do hope that she could take it as a lesson and try whatever accessible and possible means to improve it or at least be aware of the shortcoming with herself and realize the importance of confidence, which is something fundamental for lawyers. ( which i`m also badly in need of.. T_T)

Speaking good English is not an easy task for most Malaysian, people admit it, people realize it. We have no choice but to take it as our own tool to strive forward.

Being a Chinese, we speak mandarin in primary school, bahasa Malaysia in secondary school and English in the university. To know more than a language is good as it is a mean for us to access to the precious knowledge, but when it functions the otherwise, something more have to be done. We are obliged to learn the language for the knowledge, not to learn the language for the language. To spend years or even decades to learn languages is a waste, unless you fall in love with them.

However one regards the importance of the languages, it becomes a determinative of one`s intelligence. People with great proficiency of language are regarded smart, intelligent and…just geng!!! Even he is not.

It must be admitted that however suck one`s English is, the attitude of the person determines the future, not the language per se.

Thus, having a right attitude is vital, not the language. though I can see now only a few having it. ( ~~witness it in the lectures and classes~~...)

A plate of nasi lemak with a telur mata and some home-made spicy sambar, a chicken burger and a cup of iced teh-O. quite a heavy meal for dinner but it seems just nice tonight. Unexpectedly, It takes us for almost two hours. Of course, not for the food per se, but for our different difference.

Life can never be interesting if it is about repeating the same routine. This is understood worldwide and people are trying different things in different manner in different moment, yet some are just merely carrying out their well planned schedule to reach their prospective destination.

Song fluctuates feeling, experience steers life, movie alters decision and scene changes mind. Tonight, in the hall of all imaginations, It has changed a mind, a decision and perhaps a life of mine.

The scene of overflowing satisfaction appeals to every sensation of me. I can make no voice of it, say no word for it… there are just too deep to be heard.

Time is ripe to make a choice. Forward or remain. Take or leave. Difficult or easy. In or out.

I take the former.

Perspective changes from time to time subject to surrounding circumstances. It can neither be static like corpse nor mercurial like girl. Some are affected by friend, some by environment, some by scene, some by feeling and some – " No reason "

I was far too shortsighted. prices and rewards come from manifold forms. A friend of mine once told me – satisfaction.

Indescribable. Unspeakable. Invisible. I was once felt.

I missed out. I missed out the scene. I missed out the friends. I missed out the experience. I missed out the feeling. I missed out the memories….

The one who fights in the street, smokes in the school, flies in the night, has since long been forgotten. The one i miss…

Maturity drives human to a higher platform to perform and the momentum forces ones to think, consider, ponder, ruminate and even meditate in every decision making process so as to cull the best from the bests.

This leaves a deep side effect on the ones who might not even know what has happened until he is too late to know..

I miss the simple life with no stress, worries, sadness and guilt. The aim of the day achieved in day and the hatred of the day diluted in day. Surprises lurking everywhere as u can be snatched in any moment. Planned life can never do it though life can never be planned.

I am now in a planned place, doing a planned job, hoping for a planned result and having a planned life. The every next action is planned and every such action is discharged in accordance with planned plan. Surprises and excitement are much restricted and blocked as opposed to the old days where they come from everywhere..

Time elapsed and man grown, perplexity and intricacy emanate from the progress and advancement of mankind which have tainted the man. I only hope the naïve side of me may prevails over the planned side..like a child playing in the ground.

An innumerous lessons are always stood by your sides whenever you are aware enough of them. By proper observation and inference, you may unearth the secrets of life.

As an ordinary man with limited understanding of life, I apprehend the unlimited powers an ordinary person can acquire to achieve something unlimited.

ABC represents simplicity and It should be the same as our life and country.

Whenever I come to the issue of unity, I am always adversely impressed by the fact and reality in Malaysia.

My family...

As a son or daughter, would you be happy if your father gives special treatments or privileges to your sibling instead of you?

Whenever there is a sweet, it will be given to your brother.

Whenever there is extra money, it will be given to your brother.

Whenever there is a chance to gain money, knowledge or benefits, you will be the last person, if any for you.

and you are strictly not allowed to oppose, either verbally or literally. When you ask what benefits or rights you can gain from the family, or your father instead, you will be told that you are recognized as a legal member of that family and you are allowed to do what is being told and not otherwise.

Would you be happy with that?? Would you like your sibling? your father? Your family? Or Would you say ~ family boleh~? Or ~ 1 Family ~?

They are answered. I am sure.

Even they are your siblings, who are blood-related and close to each other, you can hardly suggest unity without any hard feelings. The hatred and animosity are embedded unseen and deep in your mind, like a bomb, waiting for the time to explode….

What about if they are not even your siblings?? Different colour from you and profess different beliefs from you. It is already a great achievement if you can stay together, not mentioning the aspects of Unity and prosperity.

There will be no real unity if such case continues…

The Civilization of Toilet...

I strongly believe every Malaysian knows well how our public toilets look like, how it smells like and how it feels like… I had once heard a very true statement from a friend of mine :

A country`s public toilet reflects the civilization of the nation..

Surprisingly, I find this analogy sounds considerable true by comparing the more advanced country`s public toilets with ours. The differences can be adduced as follow:

When u enter their toilet, u will say: “ Waooo…. Great…”

When u enter our toilet, u will probably say: “……………………” why?? coz u probably dare not even to open your mouth.

i always wonder why we can`t afford to have a better quality of public toilets? Why our toilets must be like this but not that, look like this but not that, smell like this but not that…….

Malaysia BOLEH ????

I wonder the usage of this slogan, are these the usages??

> Malaysian BOLEH buang sampah merata-rata.

> Malaysian BOLEH kencing merata-rate.

> Malaysian BOLEH rompak merata-rata.

> Malaysian BOLEH do whatever he likes, simply becoz Malaysian BOLEH….

"Another amazing thing in Malaysia is that many of our toilets provide great employment, not the ones cleaning the toilets but the ones sitting comfortably in front of the toilets, collecting fee from you."

This scenario is not confined to public toilets but also the private as those in the shopping malls.

If you have ever been to Sungai Wang(KL) or City Square(JB)and of course their toilets, you may probably know well about this. Paying money to enter a toilet may seem reasonable for most of the Malaysian as we have got used to it and it sounds perfectly normal to us. BUT, do you know how the foreigners think and feel about the same matter?

About a year ago, I heard some people grumble in the City Square`s toilet :

“My god.. what a toilet is this..have to pay money but no tissues available”

“That`s right…somemore so dirtly and smelly..haiss….”

At the moment, I was so desirous to tell them..

“Hey mans.. this Is Malaysia..!! lets get use to it”

Hrrmm.. I am pretty sure they are Singaporean and how they felt toward Malaysia. But, what can I do as a Malaysian?

In Singapore, u can never find a toilet like those in City Square`s. What`s more, they are all provided with tissues, free of charge and cleaned from time to time. What about here?

“Singapore is not a good country”

I heard it for many times from certain group of people. I am not here to suggest Singapore is a greater place. But, in many aspects, including this toilets issue, they are doing far more better than us. I really think that those people who allege such a statement should think more objectively. In term of cleanliness, hospitality, efficiency, technology and security, we are defeated miserably.

“Malaysia is a great place”

My beloved country, where I have been with for more than two decades, is indeed a good place. Comparatively, we have so many interesting places : Penang, Malacca, Kl, Jb.. each of which has its scrumptious landmark food to eat and places to visit. Furthermore, there are beaches and waterfalls where you can hardly find in Singapore. If you live in outskirt, you can pick up you coolest bike and riding around whenever you feel free, getting fresh air at anywhere u like with no honk disturbing you, saying ~haii~ to your neighbours in the road, chasing the dogs in the street, fishing at the lake and playing basketball in the evenin…absolutely relaxing.

~ EXCEPTION ~

Like law, it has its exceptions, like it or not, you have to take it. When I come across the matters regarding our country`s politic, economy, education, governmental department, races, human rights, privileges , ISA , Negara Kuku, Atantuya, hubungan etnik, toilets… I can hardly convince myself to be proud of the country, to say “ I Love Malaysia” or “ Malaysia Boleh”. I am not good in hoodwinking myself, So sorry… and I strongly believe that whoever read this, when you are told that “ Malaysia Boleh”, u would give it a sarcastic smile.

What can we do?? I am not Mohammad, so can hardly make any change. Whatever.. perhaps.. I would love this country more when the toilets are cleaner… LOL

It is an " amazing " day for us, our very first attempt, our very first efforts, our very first success, with our voices, we have made a night that can never be forgotten or diluted. My heartiest thanks to Young Shuang who wrote my little name on that tempting paper and Suelyn whose heartening voice rises my confidence and enthusiasm.

When I first listened to the song, I was thinking if it was possible for us to perform it , at least, properly. Fortunately, Shuang`s sustainable enthusiasm and optimism and the surprising participation of Suelyn have driven us to this successful performance. Wahahaha…

This is really unforgettable for me, and for us.. this meaningful and happy night has curved deeply and sharply on my memory of uni life.

Customer is one that buys goods or services. Inevitably, everyone has experienced the role as a customer, buying clothes either at the night market or in the elegant boutique, having a cup of Kopi-O in the bustling coffee shop, eating your delicious dishes of food in the majestic restaurant or buying condom from the deserted 7-eleven shop....we all have the experience of being a customer, BUT , have you ever wondered if you have played the role well?? Are you a welcome or a nasty and most hated costumer?? Have you ever thought that your behaviors might have adversely affected the seller or waitress???

My dad has been running a grocery in the outskirt of Johore: Tenang Station, Segamat for around thirty-odd years and I have been giving my hands for as long as I remember. It is not a tough job but the business is freaking boring as we have to spend most of the time arranging the items and waiting for the walk-in customers.

“ Nak apa??” this is the tedious opening utterance for almost every customer walking in the shop. The responses, however, are much more hated than what you could expect and so the hideous story of customers begins…

Generally, there are chiefly two sorts of customers which I loathe to the core. Firstly, the ones who think other people are genius. He might just tell you a few words ( not the exact name of the items) and let you guess what he wants.

For instance, a customer comes in the shop and says ,“ ROKOK SATU!” and keeps silent. Gosh!! There are more than 10 types of cigarette and how could I know which one do you really seek for?? So I have to ask ,“ ROKOK APA??”. At this moment, he would still probably be unaware of the inconvenience and troubles of others. He may just answer you “ DUNHILL ” or “ SALEM” for example, hrmm..are you a new smoker?? Don`t you know there are many flavours for the cigarette! So, i would have to ask again, “ WARNA APA?? MERAH?? HIJAU??”. Irritating huh?? This is not the end, after u ascertain the colour of the pack, you would have to ask whether he wants a big or small pack as if u were interrogating him. Can you imagine that if I were to ask every customer those questions over and over again and how if they all come at once. It is just a pack of cigarette! I am not selling the insurance and buying a pack of cigarette requires need not so many question to run the transaction. Can`t they just tell me exactly what they want?? Wonder…

The second type :

superduper stingy customer. One who thinks his money is bigger than his ugly head. He would try every possible ways to convince you to reduce the price, though just 10 sen. What`s more, he is buying the only item. What is this?? We are living in Malaysia, not Africa. Does the 10 sen mean so much to you?? Don’t doubt! It`s freaking true. Initially, he would try to tell you how bad the quality or the look of the product and tell you the product does not worth with that money.

If this very first attempt fails, he would probably apply the doctrine of “ Price Comparison”: a professional way of reducing price by telling the seller how cheap the product is being sold at the other shops. “ Kedai itu jual lebih murah tauu…10 sen kurang tuu..”. For god`s sake!! if the other shop is having a cheaper price for the same item, why don’t you purchase it over there? Why are you taking the trouble having to convince me to reduce the price? Are you practicing your oratory skills? man!! We are not doing franchise , don’t expect every shop having the same price. You may try to reduce the price, but these are certainly not the proper ways. If the price sounds absurd to you, just don’t buy. Shut you mouth up and piss off!!

These are the real cases that I have handled in my dad`s shop. Apart form these, I have some bad experiences while I was working as a sale coordinator in Topman , Singapore.

Let`s start with a lighter case. As I was working in the man section, I handle male customer. I can`t really remember his face, but he looked no bad as I remember. He came in the shop as usual as others and requested for trying a new arrived skinny jean. Politely, I led him to the changing room and hung the jean for him as usual. Everything seemed normal and perfectly usual. BUT, it wasn’t at all. I noticed the guy took the jean of size 30. It`s obviously too tight for him, yet he insisted a try. So, he came out a few minutes later and requested for a bigger size, which is 32( every size is up by two inches ).

Quite a long time elapsed, I was wondering if he had fainted inside the changing room. Finally, he came out and what he did was to ask for a bigger size again. I was thinking..

“ Is this guy trying jean for the first time in his life`s time? Doesn’t he know approximately his own size of jean”.

That’s fine. The optimistic side of my mind notified me that he might well be an oblivious guy and trying to look for the best size. However, the thought didn’t retain long as the guy came out each times would ask for something new, either the sizes or types of jean. The process kept going for more than half an hour and he had had tried around 10 jeans. What an obnoxious guy!! Not only me, my colleagues were too up set about this and so we decided to show him our frowning face, as direct as possible, to notify him that we were furious with the behavior and wished him to get rid of out sight as fast as possible.

Perhaps, he finally sensed it and stopped the trying. Luckily, he bought a jean at last, otherwise, he would be cursed severely. I bet most people who work in shopping mall would have the same experience.

In another wonderful morning, I started the morning routine by cleaning the floor of the shop and rearranged the clothes after taking my breakfast. Everyone seemed to be in good mood as their smiles were so beautiful, charming and magnetic.

Shortly after the shop opened, a tall, medium-sized and handsome chap came in the shop and was browsing around the t-shirts section. He took a baseball necked shirt for a try without asking for permission. After a short while, he came out and said to me that he wanted to take the shirt but he would like to try another piece as the shirts were under promotion which two pieces for $29, which is the cheapest type of shirts in the stores. This time, he took a longer time than the previous try and came out finally with the scowling face.

He came to me and asked authoritatively whether the shirt he was holding had another colour, allegedly the ~blue~ colour which he couldn’t tell me precisely what type of blue he was looking for. He merely said to me, “ the blue which is lighter than the blue shirt over there .” as he pointed to one of the blue shirts in the shop. As a general practice, we used to display all types of shirts, including all the colours, so as to be references to customer. If they wanted a new piece, we were pleased to have a search in the store room and would hand it out if available. Therefore, I knew that all the colour of the shirts had been displayed and I told him amiably the facts.

However, he insisted me to have a search in the store room so as to make sure the colour was indeed unavailable. At that moment, I was very frustrated with the request as I knew it would definitely come in vain, for sure. However, as he was customer, i tried to do what he requested so as not to up set him. So, I went in the store room and stood there doing nothing for a few seconds before coming out to say, “Sir, I am afraid that…….”.

Unexpectedly, he was so determined and uttered the most heinous request upon me

“Erm..so can you check for me if the other branches have the color??”

what the xxxx…How to check? he knew neither the exact name of the type of blue nor the shirt`s code. So, I just told him the impossibility of getting the shirt with such information. But, he insisted again for a try. I wondered if he were there just to play a prank on me. My god!! So I walked sluggishly to the counter and called up my friends for a short chitchat, pretended to be helping him to locate the shirts. At that very moment, I was really agitated by his thoughtless and abhorrent demeanor. After hung up the phone, I went back to him and told him impolitely

“ No..no such shirt!!”

and walked away furiously as to notify him my indignation. Can you guess what was the next step he took? He approached my senior over the counter and lodged a complain against me, saying how bad and rude I treated him and etc…Sigh….

These are only a few real examples that I hope you can take note and never repeat what they did. Please.. beware of your behavior! Never think yourselves are superior just because you are customer or rich enough to buy anything in the shop, and never have the perception of the people serving you are inferior and deserve to be treated badly.

You have NO such Rights...

The leader I know…

Not willing to squander my precious time, I decided to pick up the book during the holiday with the notion of acquiring some knowledge and information pertaining to our country as I started to sense the necessity. A comprehensive book which gives me a holistic perspective of Malaysia , which I am tremendously sceptical of its capability of achieving the vision of 2020- a fully developed country in such a short term.

Reflection on Asia, by our former Prime Minister, Dr. Mahatir Mohamed. One of the most famous leaders in the country as he had been the Prime Minister for the longest time in the history of Malaysia. When he was in powers, I didn’t know anything about him. Not about his thoughts, ideas or strategies to advance the country. What I knew was that his pictures could always be seen down the streets, parks and gardens or any governmental department, almost ubiquitous. I was too young to know anything about politics but I thought he should be a great man as he was so welcomed. As time passes by, I realized that it was a naïve way to judge a person. Artists are always being liked and welcomed, but they are not necessary the great people and they certainly can`t be the leader for this reason.

In spite of the publicity and celebrity, I can only have a stand to assess a person if I know him personally or know his thoughts. It is always hard to believe something in its entirety. As for religions, I never sure which god is the genuine one, Nabi?? Christ?? as each has its authoritative claims. Hence, I can`t convince myself that everything written in the book is absolutely true, hopefully, this one is. Whatever, regardless of the authenticity of the content, I find something very meaningful and useful.

It is said that if we help others to enrich themselves, we will eventually enrich ourselves. Likewise, if we tend to destroy others, we will ultimately perish ourselves. This saying resembles the Buddhist conception of “ Karma”, which is believed that if we do good deeds, we will be blessed and good things come around and so vice verse. There are innumerous instances justifying the authenticity of the saying. Take an example, if you are generous, helpful and always give a hand to the needed people, u will somehow improve yourself in term of problem-solving skills as well as enhance your social connectivity, which is superb essential to one`s life. If you behave the opposite, u improve nothing and are much deserve to be left alone when u face any dilemma. So, choose yourselves…

This is just a simple case happens on almost every single of us. From the book, I saw another practical example. Japan- the best country in Asia and having the second largest economy in the world, practices the aforesaid concept. The second world war left a tremendous impact upon Japan, which a large part of it was perished and demolished. However, it recovered faster than anyone could expect and becomes so advanced now. Apart from the Japanese ethics, custom and knowledge of management, the accomplishment is also attribute to the country`s policy or behavior towards its neighboring countries. Economically, Japan helps us a lots by providing us loan and sharing its technology so our country can develop a little faster than expected. As we developed and strengthened our own economy with their helps, we buy their products! The bottom line is they are actually enriching their own country by helping us.

There is another point that I am in agreement with Dr M`s. Generally, we tend to relate Islam with terrorism, worse still, some even equalize the religion with destruction and regard it as the root of all evils. Before this, I had the same view as I have always had a prejudice against the religion as many other Chinese Malaysian due to the destitute of understanding of the religion. However, my view has partially been changed after considering what Dr. M had written in the book. Not every Islamite is having the nature of terrorism and aggressiveness. A large part of them are merely the victims who are innocent and are being victimized by some brainless hooligans who bomb their own country around, causing deaths and destructions. At the end, the whole group of people, including the innocent ones, are penalized by being named as terrorists, I would say this is an inaccurate statement and this saying is being rather unfair to those who are innocent from the inception.

No one will come around and slap your frail face if you never do or say anything wrong. The 911`s case is one of the good examples. Has anyone known the real reasons why the freaks dare to hit the building with the thought of killing themselves too? Causing innumerous deaths and massive destruction. I seldom read newspapers, so I am not so sure of the said causes of the tragedy. But, I do know that united states had earlier intervened with the terrorist`s country`s affairs in the aim of its lucrative petroleum. Determined to harvest stupendous profits from the country in order to enrich and develop its own country by intruding other`s country has resulted such a mournful catastrophe. However, it is incontrovertible that bombing is never a solution and what the indignant people did the bombing had further aggravated the problems they were encountering. What`s more, the incident of 911 rendered united states a golden opportunity to further interfere with the country`s affairs openly, giving its own country many highly sacred reasons to protect the rights of others and safeguard the justice. Whatever the causes and solutions to the tragedy, who are the ultimate victims?? I think this aspects needed to be focused the most and remedied immediately.

Of course, it can never be a single universal solution to all the problems. Sheer commitment and cooperation from various parties are vital for the solution. Selfishness of the advanced countries makes the poor countries even poorer. The president of the strongest country- Barack Obama, had once articulated the following: Home to the homeless, Job to the jobless. I do hope it applies to everywhere, not being confined only in United States as it has the power to influence everywhere.

THE LIFE OF STUDY

Even if you are not an Asian, I believe you must have heard of this saying “ study hard, score good grade and so you can get a high paying job ”. This saying is so well-known, especially in Asia where people are always having the perception that academic qualification is the prerequisite to be rich. This entrenched idea has evolved around the world since centuries ago.

As a result, nowadays, people are studying harder and harder for the aim of money, not because of the precious and unfathomable knowledge which has brought infinite benefits and convenience to human being. In Malaysia, people keep advising and encouraging their children to be a doctor, lawyer, engineer or some other professions because by doing so, they can go through a luxurious life, buying branded cars and clothes. Is this the life being pursued by every single one of us? What does study mean to you???? All about money??

When I was in primary school, I`d never had any thought of studying hard and I didn’t understand why some of my friends were studying so hard in order to get the name of number one since I could still proceed to the higher level even if I failed the examination, why not play together and enjoy the schooling time. At the time of standard six, I had to face the “UPSR” which had certain degree of effect on my destiny either to proceed to form one or stay back a year in the remote class. My parents hadn’t concerned much about my study. Instead, my sisters were taking charged of it. I was told repeatedly to strike harder so I wouldn’t have to waste my time. Thus, I put a little more efforts in study just to do it in accordance with what my sisters said to me. Fortunately, I managed to skip the remote class with the “Ok ” result and proceeded to form one.

During the time of studying in primary school, I had always been an ordinary pupil except for some talents in drawing and sports, though not excellent. In secondary school, there was a qualitative change of my life. This was when I started to learn smoking, playing truant, fighting, flirting with girls, chatting on sex and exposed to gangsterism and vandalism and etc. Admittedly, this was by far the happiest moment in my life even though I had wasted lots of precious time to gain knowledge. At that time, I didn’t bother about the study and enjoyed my life thoroughly, did whatever I wanted to without considering much of the consequences. For instances, I was brought to the police station for fighting, ceased to be a prefect for smoking in the dingy toilet and canned countless times for skipping classes and assemblies. I still remember the worse case which happened when I was a prefect, I abused of my position to bring two “accomplice” to one of the classrooms during the recess time. One of them took a water bottle out of a girl`s bag, emptied the bottle and filled it with his nasty urine. Happily, we placed it back to the bag and left secretly. We were so happy at that moment not because of being able to bully the girl but because of doing something crazy, sane and irrational with the thought of accepting any consequences, though we had been canned severely afterwards.

However, happiness did not last long, my life was again changing when most my friends left the school before even sitting for the SPM examination and started searching for their very own path of lives. Hence, my schooling time had to be shared with those remaining friends who had relatively more interest in studying. Initially, I couldn’t really cater to the life of reading books, doing those hateful homeworks and preparing for all the irritating examinations. However, with the helpful working experiences as a plaster ceiling worker during a holiday, I realized how important study is to change my life. At that moment, my perspectives of live and study had substantially been changed. I had to decide my own future and I knew that qualifications play a great role in determining my career and so my life in the future. Due to such realization, I resolved to put my greatest endeavor to excel in academy. Determination , perseverance and motivation are very much attributable to every single excellent performance as well as in study. I always believe that I can do as well as others and even better. This belief is the vital motivation which leads me further, giving me endless power and strength to improve myself, not solely to show others that I can do whatever they can but also showing myself that I can go further if I want to.

Eventually, I succeeded to enroll in one of the premier universities and I was so lucky to be able to get the course which I`ve hope for the most- Law. Sound boring? Yes, it was to me before understanding the teaching and learning process of this course. Besides, before entering the university. I thought the people taking law must be very diligent and boring, know nothing about fashion and never got exposed to the “ Bad Things” like fighting, racing and bla bla bla…But, I know I was wrong after spending some times with them. Some of them know these Bad things even better, some know the fashion better and each of them is so distinctive, interesting and impressive. For instances, AH TING – one of the muscular guys with a tattoo on his right arm, impresses me profusely. He was one of the listed top students in Malaysia for scoring 5 A in the STPM. What makes him more interesting is that he is now a vegetarian and he always tells us about “KARM ”( Cause and Effect ) and his beliefs in life. Amazingly, the answer to why he becomes a vegetarian is because he loves animal. What impress me the most is not all about the good results and vegetarian, as far as I am concerned, he was a gangster in his secondary school. He had fought in the school for countless times and he had even asked others to fight in front of him as a show by threatening to hit those who refuse. How can such a person change completely in such a short time?? Amazing right??

There are many more interesting people like Louise, Neo, Vivian…. and each of them is so special, playing each role to make our study life happier, meaningful and unforgettable. I really need to salute them, thank them for being a part of my life, making my life interesting. My dearest coursemates and “ brotherhood”, thank you so much. Hopefully, we can together go through the remaining years smoothly and happily. Lets strive together!!!

MISTAKE ``I Love You``

No one in this world can avoid making mistake. What we need to do is to learn from the mistakes and never repeat it. Like anyone else, I did a quite number. The one remains vividly in my mind is the foolish choice I made to let her go without even explaining the reason. This mistake is, among all, the most remorseful thing I have ever done in my life.

At that moment, my life seemed to plunge into a darken, uncertain and confused abyss, having no guide to lead me to the brightness and leaving me alone to struggle frantically for help. My life was merely repeating the same routine everyday which I didn’t really enjoy, yet my choices were limited since not many of my friends were around. At around 9 a.m, I would wake up to help my dad looking after the messy shop and dealt with those nasty customers. If the day wasn’t busy, I would go for exercise at the evening, though barely. After taking my dinner, I would go to the nearby snooker shop and spent my whole night till 2 or 3 a.m. It was super boring, yet I repeated the routine for months. What was I thinking…

Helplessly, I repeated the same routine without having anyone to tell me to do something beneficial for myself or the society, not even my conscience had ever thought something was wrong. At the same moment, she called up for a numerous times but I didn’t pick one. Even till now, I have no even a single idea what was i thinking about and why did I let myself to go through those life, why I didn’t pick the phone and why I just let it be like that even though I still had the feeling….

I can never forget the first glance of her. That was a sunny day and I was attending a religion-oriented camp. Upon arrival of the gathering spot, I noticed a girl with shrill green shirt. She was slim, fair and beautiful but what most attracted me was, her smile. Those every smiles have been associated with my mind, can never forget them. I told myself right away “I must get to know her! ”. >_<

At the night itself, there was a feast and many delicious dishes had been prepared by participants from various states of the country. Thus, we could have different foods from different states at the same moment. Not long after the ceremony got started, I saw her again!! I wasn’t going to miss the precious chance, so I approached her, tried to grasp her attention and of course to know her. I wasn’t a creative person but one who is practical. I started the conversation by saying “ Hallo..” and then followed by the old and sophisticated way to get to know her.

“Miss..erm..are u Xiao Bai???” . The denial had led me to another question and it went on and on till I get to know her, excited!! The following day, we met again and I knew that I had developed some special feeling towards her, I guess she could sense it. So did I to sense hers. We exchanged hand phone`s number as if we had so much triviality to chat about, chatting about our parents, friends, relatives, lovers and of course our feelings.

The camp finally came to an end. We managed to take our only photo before leaving reluctantly. Thankfully, she wasn’t staying far and we could still meet. A few days elapsed, the day much waited came and we both met again. I really enjoyed the outing and I missed it so much. We didn’t do much thing since nothing to do in this little town, yet it is so memorable, especially in the KFC, that was my first time dating in the fast food restaurant, amazing….

We talked in the phone almost every night. She shared her experiences with me and I did the same to her. Her voice gradually became a part of my life, like a certain drug, needed before going bed every night. I remember she used to like watching Korean series and always cried for the sad stories or endings. Sometimes, her mum took the phone and I had to be pretending to be her friend or schoolmate, who asking something about the home works. This state lasted for few months before I fell into the uncertain and confused state, ignoring everyone including her .

After the “grey” time passed, I attempted to go back when I realized well that I had made a greatest mistake, the feeling billowed as if it had never diminished. Unfortunately, failure came to me. For that very moment, I felt the sadness, deep in my heart which I had never experienced before and the feeling of repentance of what I have done. I knew I had made a grave mistake, which was irreversible.

As I said, everyone makes mistakes and it is right to so do in order to learn more, perhaps, to learn what life is. However, does the wrongdoer deserve a second chance to start all over again? I can apprehend this question is subjective and depends on cases. In my own case, I realized that I behaved too irresponsible and it is most right to get penalized this way. I really hope to get the chance to do something. At least, to do something as the compensation for what she felt. I know, she is now attached and may be treated much better than what I did and she might well say that it is unnecessary to do anything for her. I just want to let her know something I`ve wanted to tell her long ago, kept deep in my heart but never revealed it faithfully, I wanted to tell her that at that very moment..i really Love her…
